Quel luminaire choisir selon la pièce : salon, salle à manger, chambre

Which light fixture to choose depending on the room: living room, dining room, bedroom

Each room in the house has its own lighting needs: a living room requires versatility, a dining room conviviality, and a bedroom softness. Here's how to choose the right lighting for each space.

In the living room: the main living area

The living room accommodates very different uses depending on the time of day: reading, entertaining, watching TV. A central chandelier with a dimmer allows you to switch from bright daytime lighting to a softer, more intimate atmosphere in the evening. The diameter of the chandelier should be proportional to the size of the room (add the length and width in meters to get a diameter in centimeters), and supplement with a wall light or a side lamp near the sofa for targeted reading light.

In the dining room: conviviality and centering

Above the table, a chandelier or a linear pendant light should be centered over the tabletop, at a height of 70 to 80 cm above the surface. Its ideal width should cover approximately two-thirds of the table's width, to illuminate guests without dazzling them. Models with amber or golden tones particularly flatter tableware and shared meals.

In the bedroom: softness and intimacy

The bedroom requires more enveloping than functional light. Opt for bulbs with a warm color temperature (2700 Kelvin), a more modest-sized model than in the living room, and pair the ceiling light with wall lights on each side of the bed for evening reading, rather than a single, abrupt central light source.

In the entrance and hallway: wall lights

These passageways do not require an imposing chandelier. A wall light, or a series of identical wall lights arranged at regular intervals along a hallway, is sufficient to create a warm illuminated path from the entrance, while enhancing the walls.

Our tips for harmonious lighting

The secret to a well-lit interior is not a single, powerful light source, but several superimposed sources: a central fixture for ambient light, wall lights or accent lamps for functional areas, and dimmable bulbs to adjust according to the time of day. Mixing blown glass shades from one room to another (amber in the living room, opaline in the bedroom, for example) also helps to give each space its own identity while maintaining stylistic coherence throughout the house.
