Should you choose between a chandelier and wall sconces, or combine them? In most rooms, the answer is less about a choice and more about balance: a well-thought-out central light and complementary wall lighting create a richer atmosphere than a single light source, however beautiful it may be.
The role of the chandelier: structuring the space
Placed in the center of the room, a blown glass chandelier provides a clear visual hierarchy: it signals the heart of the room, whether it's a dining table, a living room, or an entryway. Its light, most often diffuse and encompassing, illuminates the entire space but rarely, on its own, creates an intimate evening atmosphere.
The role of the wall sconce: nuanced and sculptural
The wall sconce intervenes differently: it creates localized lighting zones, accentuates a wall, a painting, or an alcove, and allows for adjusting the light intensity according to the time of day. Two sconces placed on either side of a mirror or a fireplace provide symmetry that structures the room without competing with the chandelier.
How to combine them without cluttering the room
The simplest rule: the chandelier remains the focal point, while the sconces remain secondary touches. Avoid multiplying too many different styles in the same room; a chandelier and sconces from the same range, or at least the same shade of glass, guarantee immediate visual coherence. In a living room, a central chandelier combined with two sconces framing a sofa or a bookshelf creates adjustable ambient lighting. In a dining room, the sconce is less suitable above the table (where the chandelier dominates) than on the side walls, to avoid dazzling guests. In a bedroom, the combination is particularly effective: a chandelier for general light, bedside sconces for reading, without having to multiply table lamps.
